Neofinetia falcata in my Japanese garden, July 2015
The end of the rainy season here in Kyushu, Japan usually falls on the first or second week of July, and also marks the peak flower season for one of Japan’s most celebrated orchids, Neofinetia falcata. I grow both wild forms, known as fuuran (often misrepresented as furan) and the selected varieties called fuukiran (again, usually called fukiran). Luckily, they require little assistance from me since I don’t repot as much as I should, letting nature do most of the work. Still, each year they grace my garden with lovely flowers.
Here is a sample from this year.
While this wasn’t a banner year for my plants, they still looked pretty good this season.

Glad to see your newest update. Plants are beautiful as always.
Beautiful plants Tom. I’d be interested in seeing more of your “swings”. I’m growing a Fuuran on a slab of cork that will soon be a ball of flowering plant.
Thank you Jim. I like to grow Neos on horizontal surfaces, hence the “swing”. As you know, these guys can get massive over time. I have a group on a crape myrtle that is starting to get positively huge. Tom
Yeah, this is a common thing. I hate watermarked images, so folks love to take whatever and use it. I don’t really care unless they are directly using it to make money, as in this case. Thanks for the heads up.
What a beautiful site! I LOVE your page on cosmos flowers, if you want a pict. of the cosmos cupcakes, I could send you some beauties, they are flowering right now. Best,Diane
Hi Tom, thank you for your informative blog and awesome videos on YouTube. I am from Melbourne Australia and i am having a go at try to grow Neofinetia Falcata and some hybrids and also some of the Chinese / Japanese cymbidiums – sinense , ensifolium , Kanran and goeringii. I am trying to find some of the amazing pots that i have seen on your videos and on instagram but I cannot find vendors that ship overseas especially to Australia. Would be able to offer any help? Once again thank you for the excellent information that you provide. All the best

Hi ALf! Sure, I can get some pots for you. I’ll email soon about it. I also intend to make pots available to the general public via this site in the near future – yes, I really mean it after years of threatening to do so. Thanks for the nice comments as well. Tom
Hi Tom,
I’m on a search for a Seikai. I know a lot of orchid sellers, as I’ve done sales for a few of them at the Santa Barbara shows. My hunts not going well …do you ever sell a single growth division? Or trade?
Hi Claire. Nothing much to do except keep an eye out for poor growth, etc. They seem a bit more susceptible to rot, so repotting on a yearly basis couldn’t hurt. Otherwise grow it as you would any other neo. Have fun!

Thanks Carol. I have a few more to post, so keep an eye on this article as I’ll be putting up more photos in the coming weeks. Tom

The effort in exporting plants legally from Japan is too time consuming. Sorry!
Hi Tom. Was able to pick up a large seikai in Japan. Any growing/cultural tips for this variety as I hear it can be finicky?

Thank you Tom! This one has been on my wish list for years. Hoping the flower spike present when purchased will open 🙂
